Sound for Blogs

August 18th, 2009

We noticed several people are asking about how to add sound files to blogs.  The best and easiest solution includes uploading a mp3 file.  Some teachers have asked for a simple way to convert their sound files from different formats to mp3.

Here is a converter install with the necessary plugin install that make the process quick and simple.

BrainBlast Assignment #3

July 10th, 2008

This week’s assignment focuses on PowerPoint.  There are two courses that include PowerPoint as a key application.

We want you to create a PowerPoint slideshow with three slides and add your favorite song to one of the slides.  You decide.  If you don’t have a favorite song in mp3 format you can use ours.  Beethovenish

Email us at brainblast@weber.k12.ut.us  and attach your PowerPoint slideshow. We can’t wait to see how you do on your third assignment.   Remember if you have any questions or concerns please let us know.

Here are some hints…Add, music, songs, or sound effects

1. Display the slide to which you want to add music or sound effects.
2. On the Insert menu, point to Movies and Sounds, and then do one of the following:
 Insert a sound file
 Click Sound from File, locate the folder that contains the file that you want, and then double-click the file.
Insert a sound clip from Clip Organizer
 Click Sound from Clip Organizer, scroll to find the clip that you want, and then click it to add it to the slide.
3. Double-click the sound file that you want to insert.
4. When a message is displayed, do one of the following:
 To play the music or sound automatically when you go to the slide, click Automatically.
 To play the music or sound only when you click the sound icon  , click When Clicked.
5. To adjust the settings for when the sound file stops, click the sound icon  , right-click, and then click Custom Animation.
6. In the Custom Animation task pane, click the arrow on the selected item in the Custom Animation list, and then click Effect Options.
7. On the Effect tab, under Stop playing, do one of the following:
 To stop the sound file on mouse-click of this slide, select On click (the default).
 To stop the sound file after this slide, select After current slide.
 To keep the sound file playing for several slides, select After, and then set the total number of slides the file should play on.

Other Tips
If the length of the sound file isn’t long enough for continuous play on a slide, click the sound icon  , right-click, click Edit Sound Object, and then, in the Sound Options dialog box, select the Loop until stopped check box to repeat the sound continuously.
You can also add music to a presentation by playing a CD. Music that is played from a CD is not added to the slide. To create settings for the CD, on the Insert menu, point to Movies and Sounds, and then click Play CD Audio Track.
To make the sound icon invisible in a slide show, select the Hide sound icon during slide show check box in the Edit Sound Object dialog box. Use this option only if you set the sound to play automatically, or if you create some other kind of control, such as an action button, to click to play the sound. Note that the sound icon is always visible in normal view.
If the path name of a linked file exceeds 128 characters, Microsoft Office PowerPoint is not able to find and play that linked file. In such a case, you can either rename the linked file, or shorten the path name by copying the linked file into the folder where your presentation is located. Then either update links automatically by using the Package for CD feature, or update them manually by removing the sounds from the presentation and then adding them again.

Protecting Pages

October 16th, 2007

Setting the Restrict Access To Page dialog box options

The purpose of this dialog box is to add a server behavior to a page that allows only authorized users to view the page.

To set the dialog box options:

  1. If you want only users with certain access privileges to view the page, select the Username, Password, and Access Level option and specify the authorization levels for the page. For example, you can specify that only users with Administrator privileges can view the page by selecting Administrator in the authorization levels list.To add authorization levels to the list, click Define. In the Define Access Levels list that appears, enter a new authorization level and click the Plus (+) button. Dreamweaver stores the level, saving you from typing it for each page. Make sure you enter strings that exactly match the strings in your user database.
  2. If you want to set more than one authorization level for a page, Control-click (Windows) or Command-click (Macintosh) the levels in the list. For example, you can specify that any user with Guest, Member, or Administrator privileges can view the page.
  3. Specify the page to open if an unauthorized user attempts to open the protected page.  Make sure the page you choose is not itself protected.
  4. Click OK.

Dreamweaver adds a server behavior that redirects the user to another page if the user attempts to bypass the login page by typing the protected page’s URL in a browser, or if the user is logged in but attempts to access the protected page without the proper access privileges.

  2. Name your list(Period 1, Per. 2, etc.) Something you will remember that makes sense.
  3. Select “Manually specify location and participant ranges”.
  4. Click “Next”.
  5. Select “Education Template”.
  6. Click “Next”.
  7. Leave Default “Selected Fields”.
  8. Click “Next”.
  9. Do not make changes to the group page.
  10. Click “Next”.
  11. Click “Finish”.
  12. Fill in the Fields Listed with the information from your class.  Last Name, First Name, etc.
  13.    ***NOW THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP***
  14. In the top left select “File” then “Save”.
  15. Once it is saved select “Done”.

You have now created the list correctly so the assigned students match the numbers in the Response Table.  This will also correctly give you list names of students in your Generated reports.

Recent Excel Course

October 8th, 2007

Recently we taught a course regarding Microsoft Excel.  We discussed cells, rows, columns, sheets and books to get started and then we discussed how to use Excel in an educational setting.  One of the questions that came up was how do we make changes by just pressing a few keys on the keyboard. We gave a few examples but here is a more complete list.

Keep checking back here for answers to other Excel questions and leave your own comments of questions you have so we can answer yours.
