My School Promise

Our class has been practicing the strategy of “Repeated Reading for Fluency” with two poems per week. We’re proud to present what we think is one of our best readings yet. Enjoy.

The Witches

We have just finished reading the book The Witches, by Roald Dahl. We all agree that he is a very talented author who can make you believe that fiction is real! We hope that we can be authors like that someday. Some of us really enjoyed this genre’ and othes did not. Students please leave your opinion of this book as a comment. Tell us what you liked or didn’t like about The Witches.

Building Stamina

On the first day of school we started working on the Daily 5 in our classroom. The Daily 5 are a series of literary tasks that students engage in to become better readers and writers while the teacher works and conferences with small groups of students and individuals. The Daily 5 are

* Read-to-Self

* Work on Writing

* Read-to-Somone

*Word Work

* (#5 has yet to be introduced. It’s a surprise!)

Students have worked hard to pick “Good Fit” books, to pick appropriate places to sit around the room, and to work the whole time. We all deserve a pat on the back for the progress that has been made so far. The students in our class BEG to read and write more, even when time is up. Unbelievable. Parents talk to your child about what he or she has chosen to read and what piece of writing they are preparing for publication.

“Quotes from the Kids”

Kacee: “This is the first chapter book I’ve read the whole way through! I love Because of Winn-Dixie!”

Ashley C.: “Can we please write for 30 minutes? Twenty-five just isn’t enough.”

Welcome to Third Grade

Mrs. Thurgood & Mrs. Shupe

We are so fortunate to be sharing a wonderful class of third graders this year.
We know you’ll RISE to the Challenge of 3rd Grade!
Mrs. Shupe will be teaching on Mondays and Tuesdays, and Mrs. Thurgood will be teaching on Thursdays and Fridays.  We will alternate teaching every other Wednesday.

We are excited to split our time between two things we love: teaching and raising our children. We certainly share a passion for teaching and are working together to make this the best year ever for our students! We look forward to getting to know each of you.

Please feel free to e-mail us any time. This is the most efficient way to contact us.
